Xhosa Woman and Child
20" x 24" acrylic on board, 1997
The Xhosa people are speakers of Bantu languages living in south-east South Africa, and in the last two centuries throughout the southern and central-southern parts of the country.
Men and older women have the priviledge of smoking tobacco from the traditional pipe at important cerimonies and events. The sixe and shape of the pipe reflect one's social standing (the bigger, the better).
At certain celebrations, elder and men enjoy their pipes with traditional corn-based beer called umqombothi.
